The Atlantan Coastal Plain ocCUPies about two-thirds of South CARolina, included within this flat and swampy 'low country' region are the small, sandy Sea Islands. Farther inland; the'up country' rises gradually through Piedmont until it reaches the Blue Ridge Mountains in the Northwest, and dominated by agriculture WELL into the twentieth centry, South Carolina is also a leading manufacture of TEXTiles.

Pirate ground!

In 1700's South Carolina's inlets and marshes and islands were hideouts for Blackbeard and other bloodthirsty buccaneers. ln those days English settles brought roots and seeds to plant in the fertile soil of the new colony.

On the plantations that sprawled beyond the lovely town of Charleston, colonists raised rice and the indigo used to make blue dyes.  At SUMTER there is a pIGeon farm which is said to be the largest in the world.  238 years ago ,on May 23,  " The Palmetto State" became the 8th State in 50 United States.

Note The British colony of CARolina was named for Charles I,so was Charleston. But the' Palmetto State' won its nickname FIGHTING the British King---George III. In  a fort built of palmetto logs on an island in South Carolina a small band of patriots own the first victory of the Revolutionary war. Today Charles is a beautiful port city with many formal gardens and  mansions, some more than 200 years old. General Francis Marion nickname was the Swamp Fox. On Pawley's Island an old legend is told about a  Gray-Man Ghost,he is supposed to warn people when storms are coming.

Increasingly alarmed by Northern attacks on their"peculiar institution" of slavery,South Carolina took the lead in defending the proslavery position in the decades before the Civil War. The slavery issue combined with the high tariffs of 1828, precipitated threats of secession in the 1830s.

In December 1860 pro-secession redicals--- known as free- eaters, like ROBERT Barnwell Rhett led South Carolina out of the Union! The rest of the South soon followed. In the postwar period, most blacks, along with many whites, became sharecroppers and tenant farmers. In twenties  centURy, Large numbers of blacks migrated to northern cities looking for jobs; by 1930 whites made up the majority of the state's residents.  Although some tensions persist, South Carolina has made remarkable progress in the area of racial accord. Today, visitors of all races enjoy the state's many historical sites, Charleston's antebellum charm, and seaside resorts such as MYRTLE BEACH and HILTON HEAD ISLAND.

… days of their calamity, nor have laid hands on their substance in the day of their calamity.   Neither shoulders thou have stood in the crossway, to cut off those of his that did escape; neither shoulders thou have delivered up those his that did remain in the day of distress.   For the day of the Lord is near upon all the heathen: as thou hast done, it shall be done unto thee:

The reward shall return upon thine own head.

Folks in nearby Maine and MassAChusetts shook their heads in admiration, and said New Hampshirites were as tough as the granite in their White Mountains! They were tough and they had good sense. They looked around and saw that their rock-ribbed, hilly state would be hard to farm, but they also saw the WATER power that could be harnessed from their great rivers foaming down the mountains. So they built mills and factories along the rivers, and used the rivers to turn wheels and move machinery.

Chapter 2

I said in mine heart, Go to now, I will prove thee with mirth, therefore enjoy pleasure: and , behold, this also is vanity. I said of laughter , IT IS MAD: and of

Mirth, What doeth it? I sought in mine heart to give myself unto wine , yet  acquainting mine heart with wisdom; and to lay hold on folly, till I might see what WAS that good for the sons of men, which they should do under the heaven all the days of their life.

A little boy grew up in Hannibal, MISSOURI, he later became a riverboat pilot on the MISSISSIPPI River. He used the name MARK TWAIN when he became a writer .Missouri is often called the Gateway to the West. The Gateway Arch is in St. Louis. It was built in 1966, and it is an important transportation center. The Harry S. Truman Library

independence was the first

presidential library. St.Louis, Missouri’s largest city, was once a small trading post for fur trappers. The second  largest city , KANSAS City,is a great livestock and wheat market.

The Indians believe the Ozark Mountains’s caves were doorways to a life after death. The Pony Express Riders started in 1860, they carried the mail from St. Joseph to San Francisco  through in 10 days( Indians chased them and bandits shot at them). Riders were young, skinny, wiry fellows not over age of  18, must be expert riders, and willing to risk death daily. Wages $25 a week.

The answer is Missouri—— crossroads of the continental United States , if you ask that which state lies halfway between the Atlantic and the Rocky Mountains , and halfway between Canada and the Gulf of Mexico.

Now Hannibal is a local museum, the statue of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn stands in Hannibal, a monument to the adventures boys author Mark Twain wrote about.

MONTANA has changed! She knows.

The law is only a shadow of the good things that are coming—not the realities themselves. For this reason it can never, by the same sacrifices repeated endlessly year after year, make perfect those who draw near to worship.

Otherwise, would they not have stopped being offered? For the worshipers would have been cleansed once for all, and would no longer have felt guilty for their sins.

But those sacrifices are an annual reminder of sins.

It is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.

Therefore, when Christ came into the world, he said: “Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but a body you prepared for me;

with burnt offerings and sin offerings you were not pleased.

Then I said, ‘Here I am—it is written about me in the scroll— I have come to do your will, my God.’ ”

First he said, “Sacrifices and offerings, burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not desire, nor were you pleased with them”—though they were offered in accordance with the law.

Then he said, “Here I am, I have come to do your will.” He sets aside the first to establish the second.

And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins.

But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God,

and since that time he waits for his enemies to be made his footstool.

For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.

The Holy Spirit also testifies to us about this. First he says:

“This is the covenant I will make with them after that time, says the Lord. I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds.”

Then he adds: “Their sins and lawless acts I will remember no more.”

And where these have been forgiven, sacrifice for sin is no longer necessary.

A Call to Persevere in Faith

Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus,

by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body,

and since we have a great priest over the house of God,

let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.

Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.

And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds,

not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left,

but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God.

Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses.

How much more severely do you think someone deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified them, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace?

For we know him who said, “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” and again, “The Lord will judge his people.”

It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

Remember those earlier days after you had received the light, when you endured in a great conflict full of suffering.

Sometimes you were publicly exposed to insult and persecution; at other times you stood side by side with those who were so treated.

You suffered along with those in prison and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property, because you knew that you yourselves had better and lasting possessions.

So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded.

You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.

For, “In just a little while, he who is coming will come and will not delay.”

And, “But my righteous one will live by faith. And I take no pleasure in the one who shrinks back.”

Cheyenne’s Frontier Days celebration was WYOMING’s favorite annual event. The great rodeo and roundups has been held each July since 1897. Some cowboys try for prizes in roping, bronco-riding,and throwing steers- called “bulldogging”. Less than 100 years ago, Wyoming was still frontier land,  in 1867 the railroad reached what is now CHEYENNE. Cheyenne , growing rapidly, became the state capital. It is a part of the rough life of the Wild West. The state stone is Jade, the state symbol is a rider on a bucking horse.

Long ago,the Cheyenne Indians soaked twigs in puddles of oil on the ground.PREStO! They had torches,— they did not know that someday oil wells

Uwould rise above these puddles, bringing up enough oil to fill millions of BARRELS a year!

Jets of hot water shoot hundreds of feet into the air. Steams of cold water and steams of boiling water run side by side down high mountains.

WHERE, where is this region of spouting geysers, mountains, rivers, and lakes of fire and ice? In Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming! It is easy to understand why tourists are Wyoming’s second largest industry,— they came for the sport and the scenery ——— for the big game hunting and the dude ranches, and for the awe-inspiring beauty of the national parks. There are about 3,000 hot springs and geysers in the park, the most famous geyser is OLD FAITHFul, it shoots water into the air every 65 minutes, the largest Yellowstone geyser is Giant Geyser, there are also thousands of of acres preserved for wildlife. More beautiful scenery is nearby at the Grand Teton National Park and Jackson Hole National Monument, the world’s largest herd of elk is preserved at Jackson Hole.

The official name of the U. S. Capital is Washington, the DIStrict of Columbia.

South Carolina became the first state to secede from the Union when Alberham LinCOln was elected in 1860, the first shot of the ivil War was fired on Fort Sumter in a Harbor on April 12,1861, the harbor is CHARLESTON HARBOR!
